Playhouse Creatures
by April De Angelis

The year is 1669 a bawdy and troublesome time. Theatres have just reopened after seventeen years of Puritan suppression. There is a surge in dramatic writing and the first English actresses appear on stage.  Playhouse Creatures focuses on four of the most famous (Nell Gwyn, Elizabeth Farley, Rebecca Marshall and Mary Betterton) with the character of Doll Common (loosely based on the character in Ben Jonson's The Alchemist) aiding, abetting and commenting on their progress.  The result is a powerful, moving and very funny account of the precarious lives of Restoration actresses which has become a recognised classic of modern theatre since its first performance in 1993.

Performances:
5th to 7th of July in the barn of Broughton Water Buffalo Farm.
